Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition on planning permission for the development of two residential properties. It was clear from the evidence examined that the development area was located adjacent to a site of high archaeological potential, the moated site of Burstow Lodge. The site of the proposed redevelopment, however, could not be considered to have as high an archaeological potential as the land within the moat, although it was still included within the designated 'Area of High Archaeological Potential'. The degree of medieval activity beyond the limits of the moated area was uncertain, although it seemed unlikely that any substantial settlement existed within such a short distance of the moated homestead. The place name evidence for Burstow, however, suggested that it represented either a fortified homestead, or possibly a location for communal gatherings, possibly in times of conflict or even for religious reasons. The location of this Saxon centre was not known, but it may have been more probably associated with the main manorial centre, possibly at Old Hall, than the present Lodge. The area outside of the moat could also contain evidence associated with the construction of the moated site itself, or deposits may survive suggesting possible earlier forms of the moat. The area was also adjacent to the current entrance to the moat, and signs of routes leading to this may be revealed during the proposed development work. The cartographic evidence supported the lack of a focal settlement in this area, and the documentary sources indicated the dispersed nature of occupation in the low weald. Although some of the structures present within the development area may have related to buildings shown on the late 19th century OS map, none appeared to have any direct correlation to those marked on the late 18th century Rocque map. It seemed probable that there were ancillary structure to the main moated site, and as well as being of some potential interest in themselves, it would be important to establish how early such activities developed. The site was likely to have undergone some degree of ground disturbance in connection with the earlier development of the site, however, it was not thought to have been on such a scale as to have removed all traces of archaeological evidence that may have existed on the site.
