Abstract: |
The assessment showed that the site lay in an area in which virtually no previous archaeological fieldwork had been carried out. Analysis of air photographs had identified several cropmarks, which were likely to have represented prehistoric, or possibly Romano-British enclosures. Its regional context meant that it was likely that the site lay within a complex prehistoric and Romano-British landscape. The site was adjacent to St Peter's parish church. The church was completely rebuilt in the 13th century, and it was possible that inhumation burials or structural remains relating to the earlier Norman church had survived on the site. In the medieval and post-medieval periods, it was likely that the site was used much as it was in recent years - as a yard housing barns, attached to the Manor Farm. [Au(abr)] |
