Abstract:
The site lies on the north-east flank of Bredon Hill within a deer park (HWCM 7681) which lies to the south of the village of Elmley Castle. The scheduled monument which was the subject of the survey represents the remains of a Norman castle overlying an earlier earthwork, suspected to be an Iron Age hillfort (HWCM 7263). The project was undertaken on behalf of English Heritage and the landowners to establish where possible the extent, location and nature of past excavations, spoil heaps and erosion on Elmley Castle, with a view to proposed reinstatement works and completion of a management agreement. The monument was found to be in generally good condition, with active erosion very localised, affecting less than 100 square metres of a 17 acre site. Erosion of the previously excavated areas had largely stabilised, but a number of poorly backfilled areas and levelled spoil heaps had obscured the true form of the earthworks in places. Previously unrecorded excavation areas and areas of spoil disposal were identified during the project, following a preliminary study of the archive of the 1930s excavations. The burning of stumps and wood in the castle ditches had caused significant surface damage, and the investigations of fossil hunters had disturbed masonry and stone piles.[AIP]
