Abstract:
An evaluation, comprising the excavation of a single trench, was undertaken as part of a further phase of evaluation of the proposed development area at Quay Point, Temple Meads. The ditch was located across the the postulated course of the medieval ditch known to have lain to the east of the Portwall. The trench located both the Portwall, which measuer 2m wide and survived to a height of c. 1.5 metres above what appeared to be the foundation courses, and the Portwall ditch. The west side of this ditch lay 3.5 - 4 metres east of the Portwall, the ditch originally having been cut from a ground surface at c. 7.7m A.O.D. Although the east side of the Portwall was not found due to the presence of a substantial stone built sewer and a large and unmovable concrete base and steel stanchion it was possible to establish that the east side of the ditch must have lay at least 14 metres to the east of the Portwall and that the ditch was at least 10 metres wide. The ditch was found to have probably been recut although the evidence for the date of this was unclear. Later deposits and features identified included walls representing parts of two buildings of early 19th century date, and massive landfill operations which followed the demolition of these buildings. Features associated with the railway, including the Covered Goods Yard were also recorded. The most recent activity related to a factory constructed in 1984 (since demolished).
