Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken the site of Phase 7 of the Chertsey Revitalisation Scheme. The evaluation involved the opening of 13 machine-excavated trenches. All these trenches contained a number of features provisionally dated to the medieval to late medieval period. These features took the form of small pits or post holes, although no clear pattern emerged in any of the trenches. Trenches 4 and 9 along Guildford Street revealed a large roadside ditch of probable medieval to late medieval date. The features encountered during this evaluation suggested limited, fairly isolated medieval or late medieval activity across the area. The natural deposits across the site were sandy gravel sealed by brickearth. In general, the brickearth was sealed by a buried topsoil, which was presumably related to orchards or to agricultural use during the post-medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
