Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for the construction of a house and garage. Several prehistoric burial mounds had been recorded in the surrounding area, and prehistoric worked flints were common. Medieval earthworks had also been recorded close to the proposal site. The watching brief was abandoned following the discovery of an extensive, deep feature of apparently natural origin, which contained a peaty deposit. This deposit indicated an area of formerly waterlogged land, reclaimed with imported building rubble. The earliest finds were of late 18th century date, probably marking the time of the reclamation. Indications of a ford and a cobbled track were noted. [AIP] |
