Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken due to proposals for the construction of a new football stadium. The site was not located within an Archaeological Alert Area and did not contain any SAMs, although the Raw Dykes Roman Aqueduct was situated c.200m to the south-east of the site, which did suggest some possible activity. It is known the area did not begin to develop until the mid-19th century and the actual site was undeveloped until the construction of the coal fired power factory between 1924-27. The site was added to and redeveloped until the coal power station was demolished in the late 1970s. Apart from the possibility of palaeo-channels from the flood plains of the River Soar and post-medieval remains of industrial buildings it is unlikely that archaeological remains are present. AOC recommended that a watching brief be conducted upon the site and that mitigation take place in the form of a screen of trees to minimise the visual impact of the proposed stadium upon the setting of SAM Raw Dykes Roman Aqueduct.
