Abstract: |
The report was commissioned in responses to a proposal to extend the college. The study area consisted of land within the grounds of Westgate Hill Community College, immediately to the east of Benwell Roman Fort (Condercum) and to the north of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. This site was occupied from at least c.1860 by a farm at Benwell Hills. Previous archaeological work within the college grounds had not produced positive evidence for native or Roman activity in the area immediately north of the Wall Ditch. This could be taken as conclusive negative evidence, particularly in the light of recent evidence for activity north of the wall at Wallsend and Birdoswald Roman Forts. In order to confirm the presence or absence of evidence for past activity on the site, some form of archaeological monitoring would be required. An archaeological watching brief would be considered an appropriate mitigation strategy. [Au(adp)] |
