Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it had once contained extensive tracts of ridge and furrow, prior to its development in the mid-20th century. The course of the Ilchester to Somerton Roman road lay immediately adjacent to the proposal area, and a further four sites of archaeological interest lay within 300m, including a possible Iron Age settlement, a medieval and post-medieval pottery scatter and a droveway, also of medieval to post-medieval date. The site lay just beyond the edge of the extra-mural settlement associated with the Roman town of Ilchester. In medieval times, it had lain within the open fields of the parish of Northover. It was concluded that the site had some archaeological potential, but that this would have been limited by the effects of the buildings, roads and other structures which occupied it. Observation of geotechnical test-pits within the site suggested that disturbance to a depth greater than 200mm would have truncated subsoil and any archaeological deposits which may have been present.
