Abstract:
A preliminary archaeological assessment of land proposed for gravel extraction at Barford Sheds, Warwickshire, involved background research, including examination of early maps and air photographs, and a fieldwalking survey. The site lies in an area of dense archaeological remains and a number of archaeological features, some of considerable potential significance, can be identified within it. A scatter of worked flint from the southern\npart of the site may reflect activity relating to an important Neolithic ritual complex, formerly a Scheduled Ancient Monument, immediately to the south. Two groups of cropmark enclosures in the centre part of the area probably belong to later prehistoric settlements. A thin scatter of Roman pottery probably reflects manuring of fields rather than settlement. Two medieval / post-medieval roads ran across the site, one the main road from Warwick to Banbury, the other a branch to Barford which shows as a cropmark. Traces of medieval ridge and furrow field systems are visible on air photographs. A series of other linear cropmarks probably represent post-medieval field boundaries. A post-medieval building, probably a barn or hovel, is shown on a late 17th century map, within the site. The area also contains features belonging to a number of phases of Warwick Castle Park, a Grade 1 Registered Park largely designed by Capability Brown (e.g. park boundary fence, avenue, coach roads, ponds).
