Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of 18 houses. The SMR showed that there was a high general level of archaeological activity in the surrounding area. Bronze Age material found in the near vicinity, along with Romano-British finds not far to the east, were of particular significance. The present development site must, as a consequence, be regarded to be of high archaeological potential. No archaeological material had been found specifically from the site, although this was as likely to have been due to a lack of earlier archaeological survey, as to an absence of deposits. Material relating to prehistoric activity in the area was of principal importance, with the Roman material of secondary significance, but the later finds from the area recorded on the SMR were of more dubious relevance. The site was some distance from any known medieval settlement and finds of that date may be regarded as unlikely. The early cartographic evidence revealed that the site lay within Oatlands Park for much or all of the post-medieval period, until development in the 19th century. Material of interest relating to this period seemed to be fairly unlikely. The development covered an area of c.0.4 ha, the majority of which should be assumed to have escaped development to an extent where any archaeological evidence that may have existed would have been destroyed. Evaluation by trial trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)]
