Abstract: |
The assessment showed that the site lay well beyond the limits of the medieval town. The reduced concentration of SMR records towards the Eastworth Road area reflected this fact; however, the archaeological potential was still regarded as moderate in this suburban area. Some of the closest finds sites to the present development had produced material from the prehistoric period, such as an Early Bronze Age axe and Middle Bronze Age spearhead. Archaeological material from a more central, town location was mainly medieval in date and related to the existence of Chertsey Abbey and the medieval town. Early cartographic evidence revealed that the site was totally arable until the mid 18th century, and by the late 18th century it appeared that nos. 48 and 50 Eastworth Road were present, but that the eastern half of the site was garden. A convent was marked on the OS map by 1934. [Au(adp)] |
