Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was compiled for a 5-mile stretch of coastline between Cliff End and Rye Harbour. The survey concluded that the proposed works might affect deposits and structures of archaeological importance. A peat bed of prehistoric date, a medieval salt-working, an 18th- century harbour, 19th century sea defences, WWII pillboxes, two aircraft crash sites, and a historic wreck were noted. The timber and stone remains of Smeaton's Harbour were briefly surveyed. Any conclusions can only be tested by fieldwork techniques. [Au(abr)] |
