Abstract: |
A proposed Conference Facility, student accomodation and electricity sub-station were to be situated within the Greenwich Royal Hospital Burial Ground, which was in use between 1742 and 1857. The cemetery contained an estimated 20,000 burials. Some of the graves had been disturbed and exhumed in the past, during the construction of a railway tunnel c.50m to the north in the 1870s, and prior to the construction of the existing Devonport Building in the 1920s. The foundation trenches would impact not only on any burials that were likely to be present, but would also affect any pre-burial ground archaeology that may be cut into the natural ground. The assessment found a high potential for prehistoric, Roman, early and later medieval and post-medieval archaeology within the area to be developed. [Au] |
