Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at a site which had been identified by earlier desk-based assessment and field evaluation as being a potential area of archaeological preservation. A substantial brick wall which was probably the north wall of the former Palace Theatre basement was revealed; two parallel brick footings had also probably formed part of the theatre. A thin layer of disturbed brickearth which contained a fragment of early medieval pottery and a few burnt flints was found. It had been cut by a small feature, probably a stake hole. A probable pit containing 17th century pottery and an area where brickearth seemed to have been dug out were recorded, and a variety of features and disturbances containing brick, tile, stone, concrete and mortar fragments with 19th and 20th century pottery were noted.
