Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken to provide information on the archaeological resource within the study area. Consultation of documentary and map-based archives had identified the presence of archaeological deposits within the study area. A large low mound recorded on the SMR may have represented the remains of a prehistoric round barrow, although its date and character was currently untested. An extant quarry-pit also lay within the site, relating to stone-extraction during the second half of the 19th century. The study area also contained a large detached house, formerly known as Hill Crest which cartographic sources indicated was built between 1902 and 1920. A series of early-modern garden features, including stone-built paths, beds and water-features, survived within the grounds although many were partially obscured by dense ground-plant, scrub and tree cover. It could not be entirely discounted that further, currently unrecorded, archaeological remains might have existed within the application area, given the presence of prehistoric and Romano-British findspots and features in the wider locality. Past ploughing, quarrying, landscaping/planting and building activity on the site may however have punctured or truncated any underlying archaeological deposits if present. [Au(abr)]
