Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the site of a college campus for which several new structures were proposed identified that the projected route of the London to Silchester Roman road crossed the site, and that the remains of a 'pond bay' with an overflow channel also lay within the campus. Archaeological remains recorded in the surrounding area included the site of a late 16th century homestead and moat, finds of Neolithic polished axes and Mesolithic flints, the foundations of a Roman building and parts of the Egham Causeway, a medieval road. Excavation into a probable extension of the Causeway had revealed pottery of Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and medieval date. Further archaeological work, comprising a watching brief or trial trenching, was recommended for particular parts of the proposal site, according to the archaeological potential and the level of disturbance caused by previous development within each area.
