Abstract:		 The preliminary archaeological assessment of the proposed residential development site at Tinney's Lane, Sherborne, involved the collection and assessment of information from historical, documentary and archaeological sources, as well as a site visit. The assessment showed that the site lay in an area where archaeological material of most periods had been identified, and close to a Neolithic settlement and Bronze Age cremation cemetery to the northwest, with pits dating to the 16th-17th century immediately to the south. It was not possible to provide positive evidence for the presence or absence of archaeological deposits on the site, although the area may have been used in the Middle Ages and later for drying cloth, part of an important local industry. There had been little occuption or activity on the site, however since 1570, and if earlier deposits were to survive on the site it was considered likely that they would be well preserved. [Au]
