Abstract: |
In general there were a number of findspots of prehistoric and Roman date in the vicinity which suggested that there was a possiblity of some deposits of these periods being present on the site. However, of more importance was the location of the sites within the historic core of the town. Sites A and B lay to the rear of plots fronting the High Street and West Street, which were two of the original streets of the town. Site A partly included the rear of High Street plots indicated on 19th century maps. Site B was further from West Street. Site C had the most archaeological potential and included the area adjacent to West Street which was occupied by structures in 1806. This location, towards the periphery of the historic core, was important in terms of its potential to provide information on the chronology of the expansion and contraction of the settled area with reference to the economic fortunes of the town.
