Abstract: |
The site lay within the area of the middle Saxon town of Hamwic. During the archaeological evaluation one feature of possible middle Saxon date was observed. The trenches reinforced the results of the previous evaluation, which suggested that much of the site had been disturbed by quarrying for brickearth, probably during the early 19th Century and then the construction of brick housing and public houses during the late 19th century. Despite these 19th century disturbances an area of the site was likely to have well-preserved middle Saxon archaeology. [Au(abr)] |
