Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out in response to concerns arising from the uncovering of human bones and a brick wall during drainage works at the site of a church with pre-Conquest origins. Small pieces of bone, probably or certainly human, were present in the majority of the excavated holes. These had probably resulted from previous disturbance of burials, as no trace of graves or in situ interments was observed. A number of long bones and pelvic bones had been discovered during excavation of a trench adjacent to the north side of the church tower. These seemed to have lain in a pit, presumably dug to rebury bones disturbed at an earlier date. A drainage run had cut through the foundations of the destroyed vestry in the same area, but the work had been completed prior to archaeological inspection. The foundations were, however, inspected within a hole dug on the west side of the vestry. It was concluded that no finds or features of archaeological significance had been identified during the watching brief. [Au(abr)] |
