Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to proposed redevelopment. The development area was within the ancient monument site of Thremhall Priory which was formed by an almost rectangular moated enclosure with a small moated area in the south-east corner. The assessment revealed that the study area included extensive evidence for Iron Age and Roman settlement and activity, mostly to the north of the proposed development site. The site was also bounded by the ancient routeway/Roman road 'Stane Street'. Documentary evidence suggested that the medieval buildings of the Augustinian Priory were located to the north of the present mansion house though there were likely to be features relating to general activity around the Priory over the majority of the moated enclosure. The report concluded that the northern part of the east carpark area was possibly the most likely to encounter the remains of medieval buildings. The northern extension of the proposed offices and the access road strip at this point may also encounter Priory remains though both of these areas may have been badly truncated by the construction of 19th /20th century outbuildings.
