Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the submission of a planning application for the residential and commercial re-development of the site. The evidence examined from the SMR suggested that the archaeological potential of Dorking was relatively high. Material had been identified to both sides of the High Street, although no archaeological finds had been recovered specifically from the site. This was likely to have been due to a lack of archaeological survey during the earlier phases of development, as to an absence of deposits. Although material relating to both prehistoric and Roman occupation activity was evident from various locations within the town, it seemed most likely that this particular site would yield material relating to the settlement of Dorking during the medieval period. Cartographic evidence indicated its position within the backlands in the late 18th century, and it was suggested that this area was likely to have been enclosed as part of the earliest town expansion in the 13th century. The likelihood of archaeological remains surviving in situ over the majority of the site was, however, thought to be very low. The 19th century maps examined, such as the Tithe and OS, indicated that the land had undergone a degree of terracing at the northern end. The larger part of the backlands area had subsequently been truncated by the development of the car park access road. The grass and gravel covered patio to the rear of the existing restaurant was the one possible area of the site where archaeological remains may have survived in situ, as it had been subject to a lesser degree of earlier development. The likely impact of the development on the underlying caves was not thought to be very great. Although the caves were of historical value, they were not considered to be of significant archaeological interest and no further archaeological work would be required in association with these features.
