Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment of a proposed housing development immediately north of the River Stour, on the site of Hayseech Works, identified seven archaeological sites in the vicinity. To the west of the development was Hayseech Gun Barrel Mill, a late 18th/19th century industrial monument of historical importance, but recently developed as small-scale industrial units. The southern part of the development covered the former Mill pond, infilled during the early 20th century; this would be affected although its most important structures lay outside of the area. Around the mill grew up the 19th century industrial hamlet of Hayseech, but redevelopment in the last 50 years had destroyed all of its original buildings including its Primative Methodist Chapel. The 19th century Hayseech Mill Bridge to the west, the site of the 19th century Old Hawne Colliery to the east, and the 20th century Haden Hill Park to the north, would all be unaffected by the proposals.
