Abstract: |
The assessment identified that from the medieval period until 1962/3 2 Grape Lane was occupied by a sequence of buildings dating to around the late eighteenth century, which were in turn thought to lie on earlier medieval foundations. The possibility that 2 Grape Lane was itself a late medieval building could also not be discounted. The sequence of archaeological deposits dating from Roman times to the present day in the area was likely to have been well preserved and largely undisturbed. Since these archaeological deposits were thought to be very close to the surface, an accurate estimate of their precise depth could have been obtained in a short time by removing the modern ground surface and clearing until depoits were encountered. By this means, any new development on the site could be tailored as precisely as possible to preserve archaeological deposits to best effect. [Au] |
