Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed site redevelopment. The principal aim was to establish whether Hadrian's Wall ran through the study area. This was confirmed during excavation and represented an important breakthrough and significant contribution to the establishing of the Wall's course in central Newcastle. In addition the identification of a stretch of the Wall built with an offset flagged foundation characteristic of Broad Wall construction, represented an important contribution to the current debate about the nature of Hadrian's Wall in this area. The evaluation made it clear that poor preservation of the Wall and associated features across the site was due to post-medieval structures truncating the site. [Au(adp)] |
