Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of 5 flatted dwelling houses. The site lay at the edge of the medieval town in an area thought to have been developed in the post-medieval period. A 4.5% sample of the total development area, equivalent to c.16m of linear trenching (c25 sq. m), was investigated by means of 2 machine-cut trenches. The foundations of the former tenement buildings which stood there until they were cleared in the 1950s were uncovered buried beneath deep deposits of demolition rubble. No in situ archaeological finds or features datable to earlier than the late 18th century were uncovered. No further archaeological work was recommended. [Au(abr)] |
