Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken following the submission of a planning application for the residential use of the site. Considerable entries in the GLSMR covered a wide range of periods, indicating that the site lay within an archaeologically rich area. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site was occupied by structures from at least the 18th century. The site lay on the fringes of the historic village until recent large-scale expansion adjacent to the main village road. The Croydon Unitary Development Plan reflected this. The medieval topography and any Saxon precursors were partially known in the area close to the church. The effects of settlement shift and contraction, due to epidemic or economic decline, means the strong possibility that these early periods of the village history may have been represented as archaeological deposits on the site. There did not appear to have been any excessive truncation of the site area, such as quarry pits, and, if archaeological deposits were present, they were likely to have had a state of preservation typical of dryland locations in villages throughout southern England.
