Abstract:
From the 31st July to the 25 October and between 23 April to the 11th May 2001, York Archaeological Trust carried out an open area excavation at 41-49 Walmgate. The area investigated lay on the Walmgate street frontage and covered their associated backyard areas. Evaluation had revealed evidence for the survival of deposits from the Anglo-Scandinavian, medieval and post-medieval periods. Excavations uncovered the complex development history of timber buildings from the 10th through to the 13th centuries and of timber-framed structures from the 14th through to the 20th centuries. Within the latter structures metal-working, especially iron, appeared to have taken place and spanned a period of 300 years. The structural history of these buildings was unravelled and the character of occupation in the immediate area was investigated. In so doing, the development of the site from the 10th to the 20th century was traced. The finds were rich in evidence of metal-working and the structural history and industrial residues made interesting comparisons for similar materials and buildings previously excavated in the vicinity and in other parts of the City.
