Abstract: |
Limited excavation in the grounds of Badminton School identiifed no evidence for pre-18th century use of the site. The function of a stone feature revealed in one of the trenches was unclear, although it may have been a water storage tank of 19th century date. A section of brick-faced limestone wall was recorded and was identified as the only surviving element of an unusual 'keyhole-shaped' walled garden. A stone building, interpreted as the greenhouse shown on the 1881 OS map, and of a structure typical to late 18th century greenhouses, was shown, according to documentary evidence, to probably have been constructed by John Wedgwood during his residence at Cote House.
