Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment. The site was situated directly adjacent to two Areas of Conservation, one to the north and one to the south. The site did not contain any Listed Buildings or SAMs. No previous archaeological works had been carried out on the subject site, but a number of archaeological finds were noted within a 1.5km radius. The site was situated close to two Iron Age hill forts and Medmenham itself was a focus for medieval activity. Evidence suggested the possibility that archaeological remains existed on the site, particularly for the prehistoric and medieval period in terms of auxiliary buildings connected to the medieval Medmenham Abbey. On the whole little had occurred in terms of development within the proposed development boundary until the construction of the Water Research Centre in the early-mid 20th century, which would have had some impact upon any archaeological remains. It was recommended that a watching brief be carried out on any geotechnical investigations to determine the presence/absence of any archaeological remains and the extent of truncation caused by the current Research Centre.
