Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site in support of an application for planning and Listed Building consent for the refurbishement of St. John's Hospital, a Grade II Listed Building. The site lay well to the west of the Roman city of Londinium, and outside the area of the settlement of Saxon Lundenwic. Although use for gravel quarrying in the Saxon period the site remained undeveloped until the 17th century, when it was incorporated into part of the formal garden of Leicester House. Gearard House, dating to the last quarter of the 17th century, was thought to lie immediately to the east of the application site. The report concluded that there was the potential for the survival of up to 1.5m of the lower fills of any large quarry pit on the site, which could potentially contain well-preserved organic material. The report therefore recommended a watching brief during the excavation of sub-slab engineering features. [Au(adp)] |
