Abstract:		 An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out at Thirlwall. The study area was concerned with the settlement of Thirlwall and the historic township of the same name, which occupied the same area as the modern civil parish. The township was incorporated in the ecclesiastical parish of Haltwhistle, which covered a substantial part of south Tynedale and south-west Northumberland. The settlement of Thirlwall was dominated by a single historic monument, the ruined remains of the medieval fortified residence Thirlwall Castle, which was a protected ancient monument. [Au(adp)]
