Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the development of a new car park. It was clear that the proposed development lay in an area of very high archaeological potential, with evidence of prehistoric, Roman and medieval activity from within or very near its boundaries. The most directly relevant evidence came from trench A, excavated on the site in 1990, which showed a depth of topsoil varying from 200 to 400mm, overlying a 500 to 700mm thick layer, containing sherds of prehistoric and Roman pottery, overlying furrows and perhaps other features cut into the natural chalk. In principle, the general level of proposed groundworks, at 150-200mm, should not pose a threat to the archaeology, as this would scarcely penetrate into the subsoil. In practice, deeper levels of the site could easily be endangered by normal development processes. It was therefore recommended that no further archaeological work need take place prior to the commencement of the development works, but that these should be subject to an archaeological watching brief.
