Abstract: |
Excavation was carried out on the three areas along the pipeline route which had been identified as having archaeological potential in the earlier monitoring work. This produced more evidence of settlement activity in the Early Saxon, Roman and probably prehistoric periods. The features consisted of pits and ditches. One pit and one ditch contained burnt flint and charcoal possibly dating to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age, another pit produced late Roman pottery, a 3rd century coin and an iron axe head and the other pit contained both late Roman pottery and Early Saxon pottery. Worked flints, Roman and Early Saxon pottery and four 4th century Roman coins were also found within a layer of hillwash. [AIP] |
