Abstract: |
During the topsoil stripping and excavation of the reed beds, a number of shallow pits containing charcoal, together with a possible hearth were found. Numerous pieces of iron slag were also collected from the exposed ground surface. The presence of blast furnace slag suggests that this activity was post-medieval in date, and may have involved the drying or partial roasting of ore, and preparation of charcoal for use in the furnaces.
