Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was commissioned in response to a proposal to redevelop Throckley Middle School as a Private Finance Initiative project. The study area consisted of land occupied by the buildings and playing fields of Throckley Middle School. In addition to the presence of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, which ran through the southern part of the study area, there was evidence for the presence of post-medieval colliery activity. In addition, the landscape context of the site and the spot find of a cup-and-ring marked stone in the area were suggestive of the use of the site during the prehistoric period. While the ground conditions on the site were generally unfavourable to the preservation of archaeological features and deposits, there were areas that presented opportunities for archaeological deposits to have survived relatively undisturbed. In addition, the Victorian school buildings were of sufficient historical importance to be considered in an impact assessment. In the light of the possible presence of prehistoric funerary features, the presence of Hadrian's Wall and post-medieval colliery remains, taken with the importance of the school buildings, further archaeological work would be required. It was envisaged that this would take the form of targeted watching brief work, geophysical survey and photographic recording of the Victorian School and its setting. [Au(adp)]
