Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at a site where an earlier desk-top study and evaluation had led to the discovery of three archaeological features, two of which produced evidence for activity consistent with a site of late Roman date. The presence of medieval pottery in one of the evaluation trenches suggested occupation in the vicinity during the 12th-14th centuries. More extensive area stripping was undertaken, and additional features of Roman and medieval date were located, as well as a possible Iron Age ring gully. A gully dating from 80-160 AD appeared to form part of a field system. Two similar, undated gullies to the south were probably also part of a Roman field system. Two post-hole sized features containing cremated bone may have been of Roman date. A later Roman phase was represented by a pit which contained a large number of pottery sherds from at east 35 differnet vessels dated AD 140-180/200. Medieval features included a pit and a ditch, whilst two further features may have represented the remains of disintegrated lime burning clamps. A watching brief was to be kept during groundworks on the southern part of the site. [Au(adp)]
