Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a seed bank for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Although no archaeological sites were known in the immediate vicinity, the presence of Mesolithic cave sites c. 1km from the site and a Roman road 100m to the east, and the possibility of iron-working sites in this area of the Weald, indicated that the site may have been used for activities other than farming in the past. During the evaluation, an indistinct ditch was identified within three of the nine trenches excavated. Ten abraded sherds of prehistoric pottery were recovered from it. Modern features and a further feature of unknown function or date were also noted. Finds were all of recent date, with the exception of the prehistoric pottery and a single worked flint. It was noted that an aerial photograph taken in 1988 showed two parallel curvilinear features within the field, one of which lay close to the ditch found on site, indicating that it could have extended further to the north-west and south-west. It was concluded that the feature may have represented a prehistoric enclosure. [AIP]
