Abstract:
The study area under consideration consisted of a sub circular area of land, amounting to c.100ha. The area was well developed with a mixture of high-density residential and commercial properties well served by a major road, overland and underground rail network. The only substantial area of open space was that around the Imperial War Museum at the western tip of the study area. Most of the built environment appeared to have occurred from the 19th century with the advent of the railways with particular emphasis on redevelopment following the end of World War II. The potential areas of archaeological constraint on future redevelopment within this area had been determined by the results of archaeological observation and subsequent excavations from the 1960's onwards. These results had formed the basis for the formal Archaeological Priority Zones as defined within the London Borough of Southwark Unitary Development Plan. These were based within the study area, bisecting the area north south into two halves. This was because Kennington Park Road was based upon a Roman road known as Stane Street which ran from the South Coast to London and the documented presence of a medieval village known as Newington Butts.
