Abstract:
The landscape at Brodsworth, shaped over millennia by the processes of time and human interaction, provided a unique view into a forgotten landscape. During the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Romano-British periods significant land divisions and farmsteads were defined and enclosed by at least one or more ditches with associated banks. It was a pattern which had been rendered almost invisible by modern agriculture. This had in the past produced a significant bias between upland and lowland settlement archaeology in Britain, leading to theories of difference between the two topographic zones. With the development of aerial photography the pattern of these land divisions and enclosures was unceasingly coming to light. Through the use of aerial photography it was now possible to characterise these systems and restore the balance created by the previous bias of settlement archaeology. The assessment attempted to bring into focus this landscape, to bring together a patchwork of ditch systems and enclosures into a cohesive whole. The finished product would not only enhance the present state of knowledge, but would facilitate further work at ground level in an attempt to answer pre-formulated research questions. The final product would be a much more complete understanding of the history of landscape inhabitation of the area trough assessment of its material residues. A key product of this assessment would be the enhancement of the current collection held in the South Yorkshire SMR. [Au(abr)]
