Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of two sites at Trowbridge, formerly the Ushers Brewery. The smaller and more central site was part of the town as lain out in the 12th century and was formerly divided into burgage plots facing Forwe Street and backing onto Back Street. Buildings still survived on Fore Street from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. On Back Street were 19th and 20th century brewery buildings. Most of the interior of the smaller site was terraced, recently cleared of the modern structures that had stood there, but there was some potential for the survival of archaeology. Nearly the whole of the second and larger site was occupied either by modern buildings or substantial concrete yard surfaces, with only a single earlier structure, a 19th century brick block. The earlier medieval town may have included the south-west corner of this site. Late medieval town expansions may have included the Union Street part while, in the Conigre area, there was occupation in the 17th century if not earlier. [Au(abr)]
