Abstract: |
The watching brief was carried out during the excavation and boring of a trench for underground cables and the erection of poles for overhead cables in three locations. Part of the site lay within an area in which remains of a monastery established in the 10th century AD were thought to have survived. At the south-western end of trench 1, a layer of demolition rubble, from which a single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered, was interpreted as relating to the demolition of Deerhurst Priory in the 16th century. It was possible that structural remains relating to the priory survived in situ in the immediate vicinity of this deposit. Trenches 1 and 3 cut into earthwork features probably relating to the linear banks of the medieval priory precinct. [Au(abr)] |
