Abstract: |
In November 1996 an archaeological field evaluation was carried out on land directly to the east of Engineers Corner, (the former north entrance to the camp) to test the character of geophysical anomalies identified by a previous geotechnical survey of the area. Five trenches were excavated and produced largely negative results. Anomalies detected by the geophysical survey would appear to relate to areas of modern disturbance and made ground. A number of deep modern trenches were discovered, probably relating to military entrenchment exercises. One substantial infilled ditch of possible prehistoric origin was encountered however, following the alignment of a "dyke" recorded on early OS maps. [Au] |
