Abstract:
A desktop survey was undertaken of the former Coronation Brickworks and Worker's Hostel sites. No record of archaeological remains existed from the study area itself. However, this was not to say that none had survived within its limits. The Coronation Brickworks was opened in 1935 and demolished in 1980. Previously this area was utilised as farmland. The site was now largely composed of made ground, with undisturbed natural deposits only occurring in limited areas. However, it was possible that the former medieval settlement of Kempston Hardwick extended into the western area of the site. No geotechnical records existed there were indications that previous disturbance had been limited, as a result archaeological deposits may have survived. The Worker's Hostel was built to house employees of Royal Ordnance Factory 16 in the 1940s. Site inspection suggested the southern part of the site had been subject to some disturbance and map evidence suggested that the northern part of the site had remained undeveloped. Romano-British activity located immediately to the north may have extended into this previously undisturbed area. [Au(abr)]
