Abstract:
This document aimed to summarise the results of the archaeological evaluation at Drayton Sand and Gravel Pit. The excavation was conducted over three weeks in July 2001, following the evaluation carried out by Southern Archaeology in February/March 1997, and the machine stripping and outline planning of features by Archaeology South East during 2001. The site was first utilised during the Early Neolithic, with several ditches and gullies containing pottery apparently from this period. During the Middle Bronze Age the site was used for the interment of urns, though little evidence had yet been identified for cremations. Some Late Bronze Age activity was noted in the form of occasional pits and post holes. There was a hiatus of activity during the Early Iron Age, after which two concentrations of Late Iron Age pits were evident. Two undated post-built structures were excavated. Much of the activity on site remained undated due to the lack of artefactual material, including ditches, pits and post holes. Most significantly, a large double ditch which crossed the site could not be dated due to a lack of finds. The research aims proposed prior to excavation were discussed with reference to the results. The further work required to enable full interpretation and publication was also outlined. [Au(abr)]
