Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the site. There were several aspects to the proposed scheme of development. The proposal included the redevelopment of the existing basements and the lower levels to be used for recreational purposes for mixed entertainment and leisure. Furthermore a new office building would be constructed on the southern side of the site above the existing car park. A retail and entertainment area would be developed across the entire ground plan fronting both Belvedere Road and York Road and facing into the northern courtyard. The site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area but did not contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings. However, the fountain outside of the Shell Centre was Listed. Research indicated that the area had experienced human activity from the prehistoric period onwards. However, it was unlikely that any archaeological remains survived upon the site due to the presence of the current basements of the Shell Centre which extended to a depth of -9.2m OD. It was concluded therefore that no further archaeological involvement was warranted. [Au(abr)]
