Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site of proposed new housing. The main consideration in recommending a suitable course of action was that, although the site lay within one of the Borough's 'Archaeological Interest Areas', the cartographic and historic evidence indicated that the site did not lie close to the historic core of the medieval and early post-medieval settlement. The area specific to the proposal site had only been occupied since the late 19th century and construction of the dwellings included basements. As there was little prospect for the deep burial of archaeologically relevant levels on this flat site, which was away from any large river or urban centre, the construction of basements would have reduced the area in which archaeological deposits may have remained. For periods later than the Palaeolithic, there were very few entries in the GLSMR in the vicinity of the site and the chances of encountering finds and deposits of these dates was very limited on this small plot. The presence of several finds of Palaeolithic stone tools nearby and the location of the site on a gravel terrace, known to be rich in finds of this early period, did raise this topic as an area of interest. The chance of encountering any in situ Palaeolithic material was, however, very low, although this must be balanced against the fact that archaeological sites of this period were extremely rare and consequently a high research priority. The location of a site within an 'Archaeological Interest Area' in the Borough Unitary Development Plan meant that a field evaluation to determine the nature of any archaeological deposits that might be present would almost always be required. However, in this instance, the development proposal would mostly occupy the footprint of the existing structure and relatively small areas elsewhere on the plot would be developed or disturbed. In this case, the necessity for such a field evaluation seemed doubtful and it was recommended that no further archaeological consideration would be needed on this site. [Au(adp)]
