Abstract: |
Hand excavation of service trenches within the late 13th century gatehouse of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Briavels Castle (SAM Glos 461). Medieval stratigraphy and wall footings survived within the south-eastern quarter of the gatehouse. The orientation and construction techniques of the excavated footings suggested that they represented the foundation plinths for part of the late 13th century gatehouse. Interpretation of the footings was, however, difficult due to the limited nature of the excavation which was conducted primarily to examine the archaeological deposit prior to the construction of a new washroom facility.
