Abstract: |
An emergency archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the insertion of a telecommunications duct within the route of Hadrian's Wall. The remains of Hadrian's Wall survived beneath the course of the road surface at a depth of 300mm with surprisingly good preservation of the remaining core. The presence of a facing stone in situ suggested that the original ground surface contemporary with the Wall must have also survived in this area (possibly the clay deposit) and strenuous efforts should be made to hand-excavate or at the very least observe future intrusions. No other archaeological deposits seemingly remained in the area up to this depth, although a clay level at the west end of the trench in Coach Road could have represented the natural sub-soil level. However, the depth of the trench at the eastern end of Hexham Road did not allow the natural sub-soil level to be determined. [Au(adp)] |
